Welcome to the Ruby and Charlie fund website. Here at Ruby-Charlie Fund we are dedicated to spreading the word about the Cavalier and its health issues that many are trying to hide under the carpet.
Ruby and Charlie are my very special Cavaliers, with out whom I wouldn' t be doing what I am.
Through fund raising, awareness and collaboration with other Charities we hope to make more people aware of the struggles this breed faces in regards to its future.
I don't profess to know everything, but what I do know is due to the fact that I live with two very poorly Cavaliers who suffer needlessly due to what they have inherited from years of over breeding and careless breeding.
The Cavalier King Charles Spaniel has a very long way to go to become sustainable in the future, the amount of health problems that are so common in this breed are threatening to bring and end to this beautiful little dog.
Nearly 100% of the Cavalier breed will have a Heart Murmor by the age of 6 and Mitral Valve Disease is the most common cause of death.
Syringomyelia has become highly publicised since the BBC screened a program called Pedigree Dogs Exposed and recent research has shown that up to 70% of the breed is affected with over 90% having Chiari-Like Malformation.
Chiari-Like Malformation is characterised as the brain growing too big for the scull. Many dogs are suffering and leading very a very painful existance because their symptoms aren't recognnised by their un-suspecting owners. For some dogs the CM develops into a Syringomyelia, this happens when the brain finds itself trying the find room by pushing down in to the Spinal Chord, consequently blocking the natural flow of Cerebrospinal fluid. This fluid builds up, forming a Syrinx inside the Spinal Chord which can cause Nerve damage and excrutiating pain for the dog.
When this condition is found in humans it has been described as the worst pain known to man, yet up to 70% of the Cavalier breed is living with this every day.
